Sordid and sorry tales about the corruption that exists in Berks County, especially within the court and child protective services division.

Georgia Protest Outs Biased Evaluators
Today in Georgia, Safe Kids and The Advocacy Center have organized a protest against Judge Groger, who has refused to listen to testimony about abuse from the children in a case who have requested to speak to him. Here are some signs calling out not only the judge, but the evaluators who wrote fake reports as well as the child advocates.

Also present was an advocate from Berks County talking about a recent case where a judge awarded custody to a parent with a known child abuse record.

Pettiness, Retaliation Appear Again In Berks County
This time, it's between a policeman and a lawyer who was a candidate for judge.
The story starts in February when a judicial candidate and lawyer was cited for harassment by police. Here is a Reading Eagle story detailing the incident.
http://www.topix.com/forum/city/reading-pa/TV71H9CBIF8HH50BB
This is interesting because lawyers in Berks County harass people and say nasty things all the time. How and why did this particular lawyer get in trouble???
There's more. Read this article from the Reading Eagle.

The charges were filed in February 2013. The alleged "incident" happened almost a year prior. The lawyer contends that the charges were filed simply to derail his judicial campaign. He may have a point.
The entire incident boggles the mind.
We took 2 average high school students in Berks County who had been trained as part of an anti-bullying initiative. We asked them to role play the situation to see if they could work together to avoid court.
Lawyer actor: Hello officer. I am putting up signs for my legal office..
Police officer: Well, I am not supporting your campaign. I favor another candidate, but you do have a right to put up signs for your legal office. Have a nice day.
LA: Thank you officer. You too.
See how easy that was? Now let's go to the next situation.
LA: Hello officer. Aren't you the one who told me that you don't support my campaign for judge?
PO: You have a good memory!
[both laugh]
LA: I remember seeing an article that you are a vet. [makes whistling sound and yells incoming]
PO: Hey, that's not funny. Knock it off.
LA: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you.
PO: Stuff like that really does upset me and I don't even like you. AND, I don't support you for judge either. This incident only tells me that I was right about you.
LA: Whoa. I said I was sorry. I didn't mean to upset you. [moves out of the way and ignores officer from this point on]
See how easy that was?????

Abuser Brought to Justice in Berks....After Judges Recuse Themselves From Case
Our staff was recently sent an article about how a school coach was convicted of abuse after having a sexual relationship with a student in Berks County. Staff immediately wondered HOW such a thing happened. Abuse happens every day in Berks County and most of all, the victims are blamed or the truth is overlooked. How did justice catch up with the coach?
The last paragraph provides an answer:
The state Supreme Court appointed Cheslock to handle the case after all Berks judges recused themselves because they know people involved in the case.
All the judges in Berks County recused themselves from the case, therefore, it was sent out of county. But this begs the question--in Berks County, don't most people know people involved in cases? Why did the judges recuse themselves in this case, but not the others?

CYS Aided Sandusky?
In a news article recently published, it appears that officials contacted Clinton County CYS in order to disparage the mother and the victim of sexual abuse before the report was made.
When Mrs. Hennessy first found out about the abuse from her son, she went to the school and confronted an official named Probst. Probst didn't take her allegations or those of her son seriously. However, Probst DID call the office to try to undermine the family's credibility. Read an excerpt from the article:

Hennessy and Fisher then left for the Clinton County Children and Youth Services offices in downtown Lock Haven.
Before they arrived, Probst called the county office in an apparent attempt to undermine the family's claims. A person familiar with the call told USA TODAY that just minutes before the family arrived, Probst suggested that the office regard Hennessy's claims with a grain of salt, making a reference to Hennessy's volatile personality.
This, according to parents we have interviewed, also happens in Berks County. Individuals engage in covert attempts to undermine the credibility of certain individuals in an attempt to sway cases to go a certain way.
